Ruben D'hers with 2063 ..nov2004
Ruben D'Hers from Caracas (Venezuela) comes up with his first Soloalbum "Todo está en descanso" on 2063music. He also played for some years in the Venezuelean band "kRé".
2063:I am very amazed by the depth of your album "todo está en descanso". But to my surprise i don't hear much (if any) of those typical digital effects, that many people use in this days. What to you use to make your music?
Ruben:
I use two microphones and a four track tape that works wonderfully and can reproduce and record sounds that I could never get with a computer. Some other instruments have been recorded by direct line. There are guitars, noises, clarinet, violin, piano, voices and some percussion experiments. Some of those pieces were recorded in this four track with a delay and a reverb processor. That's why you can note a 'rough' sound in some pieces others were recorded directly to my computer (a simple PC), and at the end I use a software if necessary. From my point of view nowadays the 'real music' does not depend on technology. Anyone can have enough technology to make an entire album. But the very most important thing for me is: use software only when it really contribute to enhance or improve the natural expression of your music. It is advisable to use your mind first and then use the computer or any other medium.
2063:
Ruben, please tell my about the difference between your Band 'kRé' and your personal music?
Ruben:
Mainly the difference is that I work with musicians that also have many influences. kRé's music is very different from mine and sounds more like a experimental avantgarde rock-jazz band, but kRé has a lot of my compositional concepts like melodies and arrangements. kRé explore in a strong way rhythms associated with funk, afro-beat, latinoamerican influeces and free-jazz. I currently play guitars on kRé, but also use many textures and sounds from my personal music. But mostly: i have mixed the upcoming kRé album, and this means that I gave it a lot of my ideas for colours, textures and arrangements...
2063:
So, i think you would agree if i say: it is really difficult, but yet important to get yourself into the production process?
Ruben:
I think that an artist should be very involved into the production process. Unfortunately music making is not just to play or to compose something. There are many aspects, that an artist must manage in order to music: musicians must have enough experience to release one own production so that he/she hasn't got to depend on people who doesn't understand your musical intentions. It does not matter if you are a designer or a soundengineer or something else. You have to try to reach a certain knowledge to go on further with your own projects. But if you have people around you that can understand your proposal, then that's great! An artist or an author must be at a higher place just before people can take part in the production. An artist must preserve his intentions and intuiton. And that is where the desicion is made, what will make a piece real.
2063:
What does music mean to your life as form of expression?
Ruben:
For me music is more than just a form of expression. It is a chance to communicate what is inside of me in higher levels of communication. My goal is, making music, making and making....
2063:
Can you tell me something more about the titel of the album?
Ruben:
'Todo está en descanso' can be translated as 'everything is in rest'.
A sound can stop you and compell one to hear it.
Noises and sounds can stop anything.
All motion or movement is overwhelmed by sounds.
2063:
Ruben, many thanks for your words. I am really looking forward upcoming sounds, colors and textures...
